abstract

this paper presents a three-dimensional numerical investigation carried out in turbulent forced convection in a tube with helical ribs. enhancement of heat transfer using helically corrugated tubes has beenstudied experimentally by many researchers but there exist a few published numerical analyses results. the paper also introduces the results of heat transfer and friction factor data for incompressible fluid flowin a tube with 24 mm inside diameter and reynolds numbers between 25000-80000. the geometric parameters of single start internally ribbed tubes are, rib height to diameter ratio ranging from 0.02 to 0.06and rib pitch to diameter ratio ranging from 0.6 to 1.2. the inlet water temperature is 10oc and tube wall is at 80oc uniform temperature. tube side, three-dimensional turbulent flow has been simulated using afinite volume code and the results are compared with available experimental data. it has been shown that the helical ribs have a significant effect on the heat transfer augmentation and pressure drop.

Numerical Investigation of Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop in a Corrugated Channel

The influence of variation in rib-height to channel-height ratio (e/H) on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics inside a channel with corrugated upper and lower plates was investigated numerically in the present study. The governing equations were solved by using finite volume approximations for a wide range of (0.06 < e/H < 0.26) and Reynolds numbers (5400 < Re < 23000), with a m...

Numerical Comparison of Turbulent Heat Transfer and Flow Characteristics of SiO2/Water Nanofluid within Helically Corrugated Tubes and Plain Tube

Turbulent heat transfer in Helically Corrugated Tubes (HCT) was numerically investigated for pure water and SiO2 nanofluid using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This study was carried out for different corrugating pitches (5, 7, 8 mm) and heights (0.5, 0.75, 1.25 mm) at various Reynolds numbers ranging from 5000 to 13300. The effect of nanoparticles on heat transfer augmentation for plain t...

A numerical investigation of γ-Al2O3-water nanofluids heat transfer and pressure drop in a shell and tube heat exchanger

The effect of γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles on heat transfer rate, baffle spacing and pressure drop in the shell side of small shell and tube heat exchangers was investigated numerically under turbulent regime. γ-Al2O3-water nanofluids and pure water were used in the shell side and the tube side of heat exchangers, respectively. Since the properties of γ-Al2O3-water nanofluids were variable, they were ...

A numerical investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop in a novel cylindrical heat sink with helical minichannels

This study numerically investigated heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics in a novel cylindrical heat sink with helical minichannels for the laminar flow of fluid with temperature-dependent properties. A finite volume method was employed to obtain the solution of governing equations. The effects of helical angle, channel aspect ratio, and Reynolds number, which were regarded as main para...

Investigation of convective heat transfer, pressure drop and efficiency of ZnO/water nanofluid in alternating elliptical axis tubes

In this study, for the first time, the heat transfer and the pressure drop of zinc oxide nanoparticles in alternating elliptical axis (AEA) tube have been investigated experimentally. The zinc oxide nanoparticles were at volumetric concentrations 1% and 2%. The base fluid was heat transfer oil and the experiments were conducted at constant wall temperature. Also, the study was done in Reynolds ...
